The greater flamingo breeds in large colonies on the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico in tropical and subtropical America. There are two subspecies of the greater flamingo: the Caribbean flamingo and the Old World flamingo of Africa and southern Europe and Asia. The Chilean flamingo is primarily an inland species. Two smaller species that live high in the Andes Mountains of South America are the Andean flamingo and the puna, or James’s, flamingo.
